HUNTING IN THE POUDRE CANYON

The following units 7, 8, 9, 19 and 191 are rich in Deer, Elk, Pronghorn, Bear, and Bighorn Sheep and are all in very close proximity to the Archer’s Poudre River Resort. Below is some information from the Colorado Department of Wildlife outlining the license requirements and seasons for some exciting Colorado hunting.

Licenses

Licenses can be purchased by Internet & phone:
Most hunting and fishing licenses are available by Internet and phone. This includes annual and short-term fishing and small game licenses. Purchase online at the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) website under the heading Applications & Licenses or you can call the toll free telephone sales number, 1(800) 244-5613.

Selecting Your License

Colorado offers several kinds of licenses for big game hunters:

  • Limited Licenses: Limited in number and available only by application and drawing; valid for specific units and dates.
  • Unlimited Licenses: No application or drawing necessary. You can buy them at DOW offices, license agents, online and phone.
  • Over-the-Counter Licenses With Caps: No application or drawing necessary. They are sold over the counter with a cap, which means only a preset number will be available first come, first served. You can buy them at DOW offices and license agents, starting July 11. They are available for archery, muzzle loading and rifle bear, as well as in some units for rifle elk. Internet and phone sales may be available in the future. Check our Web site.
  • Private-Land-Only Licenses: Available by application and drawing; valid for specific units and dates. Valid only on private land in specific units. You must get landowner approval before hunting on private land. Ranching For Wildlife licenses are not private-land-only licenses.
  • Ranching For Wildlife: Available only by application and drawing. Public RFW licenses available only to Colorado residents by drawing. Valid for season and ranch listed on them.
  • Left-Over Licenses: Limited licenses remaining after the drawing, available at DOW offices and license agents starting Aug. 9. Internet may be available in the future. Check our Web site.

Before you purchase a license...
Everyone born on or after January 1, 1949, must hold a valid hunter education card/certificate before purchasing any hunting license. Your hunter education card/certificate and the appropriate license(s) must be in your possession while hunting. See the Hunter Education and Rules and Regulations pages for more details.

 Things to Remember

If you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, you must have a hunter education card or certificate before applying or buying a license in Colorado.

    CC/CID
If you bought a license in 2003 or this year, your Customer Identification Number (CID) is on the license.  If you have a Conservation Certificate (CC), you can still use that number to apply.  The number is in the upper right corner of the CC.

    SSN
As required by the Colorado support Enforcement Act, established by HB 97-1205 and implemented through 24-33-110 C.R.S., your Social Security number (SSN) is required to purchase or apply for all DOW licenses Your SSN is not shown on your license.  It is provided when requested to the Colorado Department of Human Services, Child Support Enforcement, as required by law and is used to enforce the law.

Big Game season dates, license fees and application deadlines for the next 5-year season structure, 2005-2009, are in the decision-making process now. Each year the Colorado Wildlife Commission meets in January to make final decisions on possible new regulation changes pertaining to hunting. Hunters need to be aware that new regulations may apply each year. Be sure to check the big game season information brochure for more specific information.
